Concept of Smart Cities in India

There has been no official definition for Smart Cities in India. Hence, the conceptualization of smart city differs from city to city in India. Cities selected under the Smart Cities Mission, which work towards improving the standard of living of its residents and fostering economic growth, through smart solutions, are broadly called Smart Cities in India.

These smart cities in India are selected based on various criteria such as capability to use technology in achieving the objectives, ability to execute integrated, inclusive and sustainable solutions with the community benefits at its core.  

The Smart City Mission

The Smart City Mission in India is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for urban regeneration, and was launched on June 25, 2015. The Smart Cities Mission India was launched with the objective of developing 100 selected cities in India as Smart Cities. The Smart Cities Mission is implemented under the supervision of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. 

The key focus of smart cities development in India is area-based development to create replicable model of light house cities that are capable of harnessing data and technology to achieve sustainable development. The underlying assumption is that other cities will be able to make these light house cities as a role model in their development plans.

The Smart Cities of India were selected through a competitive process, comprising of 5 rounds, spanning from 2016 to 2018. Cities coming out successful in each round get shortlisted as a smart city. The Smart City Mission followed a three step selection process in the selection of the cities.
