The Smart Cities Mission was launched on June 25, 2015 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The objective of the Smart Cities Mission is development of selected cities in India as Smart Cities. The Smart Cities Mission focuses on creating inclusive, sustainable and inspiring models that can be replicated by other cities.
During the period from January 2016 to June 2018, 100 cities in India were selected as Smart Cities. Cities that can apply ‘smart solutions’ for improving the quality of life of citizens through sustainable and safe environment, better infrastructure etc., are considered for selection as a Smart City.
