Legal Heir Certificate Telangana: Documents, Cost & Online Status Check
The Tahsildar (MRO) of your area issues the legal heir certificate in Telangana. You apply through MeeSeva, pay a small fee (about ₹45 to ₹80) and wait up to 30 days. You need the death certificate first.
MeeSeva calls this paper the Family Member Certificate. Fees and timing change, so check the portal before you apply.
- Who issues it: the Tahsildar of your mandal. You apply at MeeSeva.
- Cost: older guides say ₹45. An April 2026 fee hike may have raised it to about ₹80.
- Time: the published limit is 30 days. Some cases finish sooner.
- Must-have document: the death certificate.

What Is a Legal Heir Certificate in Telangana?
A legal heir certificate names the family members (heirs) of a person who has died. These include the husband or wife and the children. Parents can be heirs too.
You need it to:
- Take money from a bank account
- Update land or house records
- Claim pension or insurance
- Settle the dead person’s other dues
Some guides say it has no expiry. An officer can cancel it if someone got it by fraud.
Why Is It Called Family Member Certificate?
You will see two names for one paper. MeeSeva and Telangana district websites list it as the Family Member Certificate (also written Family Membership Certificate). Banks and many people say legal heir certificate. The Tahsildar issues both.
Other states use their own names. Delhi, for example, says Surviving Member Certificate. A few guides treat the two names as different papers, so ask your Tahsildar office if you are unsure.
A court Succession Certificate is a different paper. Ask your bank which one it accepts before you apply.
Documents Needed for Legal Heir Certificate Telangana
Keep these ready. The office can reject your application without the death certificate.
| Document | Why you need it |
|---|---|
| Death certificate (must) | Proves the person has died |
| Aadhaar, ration card or voter ID (any one) | Proves who you are |
| Filled application form | Sends your request to the Tahsildar |
| Birth certificates, proof of relationship, affidavit, ₹2 stamp paper, address proof of the dead person (if the office asks) | Helps the officer confirm your family |
How to Apply for Legal Heir Certificate on MeeSeva
You can apply online or at a MeeSeva centre. At a centre, the operator scans your papers and files the application for you.
- Get the death certificate first.
- Log in to the MeeSeva Telangana portal. New users register with a mobile number.
- Go to Certificates → Revenue Department and choose Family Member (Membership) Certificate.
- Fill in the form, upload your documents and pay the fee.
- Save your application number. You need it to track the status.
A village officer (VRO) may visit your home to check your family details. Then the Tahsildar approves the certificate.
Legal Heir Certificate Cost in Telangana
Older guides quote ₹45. Telangana raised MeeSeva charges on 1 April 2026. News reports give ₹62 for basic services and about ₹80 with GST for services that need an officer’s check. A district government page puts this certificate in the officer-check group, so the fee may now be about ₹80.
No source confirms the new fee for this exact certificate. Check the amount on the portal before you pay, and keep the receipt. Some centres add charges for scanning or printing.
A court Succession Certificate costs more, needs a lawyer and can take 3 to 6 months.
Legal Heir Certificate Status Check Online
You can track your application from home in two minutes.
- Open the MeeSeva portal.
- Go to Know Your Application Status.
- Enter your application number.
- Read the status: Pending, Under Verification, Approved or Rejected.
After approval, download the certificate from the portal or collect it at the centre. If 30 days pass with no update, take your application number to the Tahsildar (MRO) office. You can also file an RTI to ask for the reason.
Legal Heir Certificate vs Family Register Certificate
In July 2026, Telangana started a Family Register Certificate on MeeSeva. It takes two working days. News reports give the fee as ₹62, while other sites show lower amounts. Check the portal.
This certificate lists your family as recorded on the ration card. It does not replace a legal heir certificate for a dead person’s property. Ask your bank or office which one it wants.
Final Tips
- Apply for the death certificate first.
- List all heirs, including married daughters.
- Keep a printed copy and a digital copy of the certificate.
- Talk to a lawyer if your family disagrees or the estate is large. You may need a court Succession Certificate.
Fees, rules and portal steps change. Check the MeeSeva website or your Tahsildar office before you apply.
