A Historic First for BJP in Bihar

This marks a historic moment as Choudhary becomes the first leader from the BJP to hold the top post in the state. The swearing-in ceremony took place on April 15, 2026, signaling a major shift in Bihar’s political landscape. The leadership change follows the resignation of Nitish Kumar, who had dominated Bihar politics for nearly two decades.

In March 2026, Nitish Kumar announced his intention to resign as CM to contest the 2026 Rajya Sabha elections. Choudhary was later elected leader of the Bihar BJP legislative party and was sworn in as Chief Minister of Bihar on 15 April.

Samrat Choudhary: Who Is He?

Samrat Choudhary (born 16 November 1968) is an Indian politician who has been a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly representing the Tarapur Assembly constituency since 2025, and previously served as Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar in the Nitish Kumar government from 2024 to 2026. He was previously associated with Rashtriya Janata Dal and Janata Dal (United) before joining the BJP in 2017.

Choudhary belongs to the Koeri Kushwaha caste and has been the OBC face of the BJP.

Two Deputy Chief Ministers from JD(U)

According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat Department, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav — the only two leaders who took oath apart from the CM on Wednesday — have been designated as Deputy Chief Ministers. Both are senior JD(U) leaders, reflecting the NDA coalition’s balance between the BJP and its alliance partner.

To balance the coalition, JD(U) veterans Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers. Nitish Kumar congratulated the new leader, promising “full cooperation and guidance” for the new administration.
