The Pradhanmantri Ujjwala Yojana or the PMUY is a large scale social welfare scheme that aims to benefit five crore families, especially the women, living below the poverty line. With a budget of nearly INR. 8000 crores, the PM Ujjwala Yojana plans to do this by providing free LPG cylinders issued in the name of women beneficiaries.

The PM Ujjwala Yojana was launched on 1st May 2016 in Uttar Pradesh and its tagline is “Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan”.

It complements Modi government’s Give It Up initiative, where 75 lakh middle- and lower-middle-class homes voluntarily gave up their cooking gas subsidies. The main objectives of the PMUY Yojana are to provide healthy fuel, reduce the risk of health issues that come with the use of fossil fuels, and promote women’s empowerment.

You are eligible for PM Ujjwala Yojana, if you meet the following criteria:
1. Women who are 18 years old
2. Applicant should not have any OMC LPG connection at the household
3. Women belonging to Forest Dwellers , ST, SC, Most Backward Classes (MBC) & Tea and Ex-
Tea Garden tribes,
4. Beneficiaries of Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin
5. Inhabitants of  Islands and River Islands
6. People who are enlisted under SECC Households (AHL TIN)
7. Any Poor Household as per 14-point declaration

To apply for the PM Ujjwala Yojana, the applicant must be a woman of at least 18 years of age. The PMUY caters to families living below the poverty line so the applicant must have a BPL card and a ration card. There should not be any LPG connection under the name of any of the applicant’s family members.
