A First Information Report (FIR), as the name indicates is the first information provided to the police about an offence.

An FIR can be registered by the concerned police station about a cognizable offence like theft, murder, etc., where the police are empowered to investigate and effect an arrest, without a warrant.

For this reason, the police station is mandatorily required to take action once an FIR registered.

In the context of property loss, an FIR is to be filed, and will be registered only when the loss is the result of an offence such as theft.

In cases where you lose a property, but it wasn’t stolen from you or if you are unsure if it was stolen, you can still file a lost report with the concerned police station.

An information about any item lost in Bangalore that you provide is registered at the State Crimes Record Bureau. This information is often used for future reference to verify anyone reporting the item as found or if the item is found in any other manner.

Other than this, it is not obligatory for the police to take any other action on a lost report.
